Capacity

Displayed are the frequently asked questions regarding "Capacity".

How is it possible that the 30 days forecast on the TenneT website differs from the actual available day capacity published every morning on the TSO Auction website?

The available capacity is decided upon jointly by the four TSOs. Every morning TenneT bv send the capacity to TSO Auction. Resells and nominations influence the available capacity. This information is only short before the publication of the actual capacity known by the TSOs. For more information about the determination of the capacity please contact the TenneT Service Centre.

Does the maximum of 400 MW per PRP for the nomination also apply for export capacity?

According to article 5.6.11.3 of the technical standards of the DTe the total nominated capacity per PRP, summed over the connections and after balancing the import and export, should not exceed 400 MW. For more information please contact the DTe, see our links for contactdetails.

How can the total available import capacity be determined looking at the information of TSO Auction?

It is not possible to determine the total capacity adding up the capacity for the Day, Month and Year Auction. The reason is that capacity of Year and Month Auction can be resold and that not nominated capacity from the Year and Month Auction will be refunded to the Day Auction. In that case capacity would be included twice.

How much capacity will be auctioned at the interconnectors Netherlands-Belgium and Netherlands-Germany?

The amount to be auctioned at the year, month and day auction are published at this website. The maximum capacity for the year auction is 900 MW. The minimum capacity for the month auction is 400 MW and maximum 850 MW. The minimum capacity for the day auction is 100 MW. TenneT publishes the expected available capacity for the Day Auction (choose imp-/export/transit; 30-day-ahead market) 30 days ahead.

Is there any risk of losing capacity obtained on an auction and if so is there any compensation?

To be fully informed on this subject we advise you to read the rules and regulations.
See Auction Regulations, article 1.7.

What happens with not nominated capacity on D-1?

The not nominated capacity will be refunded to the Day Auction and the owner of the capacity under the principle of "use it or loose it" will not receive any revenues.

What is the meaning of "use it or loose it"?

It is possible to trade year and/or month capacity up until D-4 (auction day minus 3 days) 08h00, i.e. to sell obtained capacity to a third party or to return capacity to the Auction Office. If capacity is returned to TSO Auction the participant that already obtained the capacity will receive the price set at the auction reduced with a handling fee of € 100. If year and/or month capacity hasn't been (partly) nominated D-1 before 08h00, this, not nominated capacity, will automatically be refunded to the month or day auction, without any compensation, according to in the Auction Regulations as the "use it or loose it" principle.

When capacity is bought at an auction, what happens when an interconnector falls-out?

The grid is planned N-1 safe. If one of the interconnectors fails the situation is N-0 and therefore still safe. The responsible TSO will restore the N-1 situation as soon as possible. If not possible then there will be a reduction. The procedure is to be found in the Auction Regulations.
See Auction Regulations, article 1.7.

Which party will compensate the missing energy when an interconnector fails?

There will be no compensation of energy. Parties that have been reduced are obliged to send in a new E-Program in which the reduction is incorporated. For more information contact TenneT bv.

Will TenneT make additional capacity available when an interconnector fails?

When an interconnector fails and the N-1 situation cannot be restored, capacity will be reduced according the Auction Regulation. TenneT will not make additional capacity available.
See Auction Regulations, article 1.7.
